New Orleans Attack: Gun or Not, Mayhem Ensues
Truck Attack in New Orleans Kills 10, Proves Gun Control Isn't the Answer to Preventing Mass Violence
As America continues to debate gun control laws, personal defensive rights, and the Second Amendment, we have a prime example of what I have been saying for years, “regardless if someone has access to a gun or not, if someone is determined to create mayhem, they will; most likely with a vehicle or chlorine “bomb.” Last night in New Orleans, while people were enjoying an evening of partying and fun, someone came out in a Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck (with a long gun as backup, though it was not used) and rammed down Bourbon Street, plowing through a large number of party revelers, killing 10 and injuring at least 30 people: https://x.com/TheRealBig5ive4/status/1874446003644047798
So, while if you magically were able to have all the guns disappear from America tomorrow, it does not magically prevent mass killings. There is zero reason to violate the inalienable rights of Americans seeking to defend themselves by taking their guns away or taxing their ammo to the point of oblivion. In contrast, those seeking to wreak havoc are still able to kill many people at one time via other methods. Can we please stop trying to put more gun controls into place and focus on the actual problem? It is those holding guns who are the problem, not the gun itself.
Increasing gun control laws does not stop crime, reduces one’s ability to defend oneself, increases the black market for gun buys, and is a serious infringement on our Second Amendment. A study by the National Research Council during the Obama administration found that right-to-carry laws did not lead to an increase in violent crime, so these laws do not reduce the impact on crime rates, as some gun control advocates would like to suggest. Over 30% of gun owners have been able to utilize their guns for self-defense; why take that away from them?
Let us move to the root of the problem. It would be great to increase Americans’ access to mental health programs, including school programs, community centers, and online resources to address mental health before they escalate into violence against others. Another suggestion would be to teach conflict resolution and emotional intelligence in schools to empower individuals with skills to handle disputes non-violently and have some emotional intelligence. There are many suggestions to improve the situation of violence against others that do not involve the violation of one’s rights as a human being to defend oneself, those are just two.
