Alcohol's Cancer Link: Known for Decades!
Surgeon General's Alert: 7 Cancers Linked, Warning Labels Coming?
Does alcohol cause cancer? Yep! Not to be a Debbie Downer, but this has been known for quite some time and is backed up by a multitude of credible studies. I have been trying to mention it to others over the years gently, yet with our culture, it is not likely to stop people from drinking alcohol long-term since 72% of Americans drink alcohol at least once a week. Yet, eliminating the consumption of alcohol is one of many of the many things one can do to help prevent getting cancer in the future.
And only now that the U.S. Surgeon General has put out an advisory that will likely lead to a cancer warning on all alcohol bottles and sales. The direct link between alcohol use and cancer was first established in the late 1980s, and evidence for this link has strengthened over time. This body of scientific evidence demonstrates a causal relationship between alcohol use and increased risk for at least seven different types of cancer, including breast (in women), colorectum, esophagus, liver, mouth (oral cavity), throat (pharynx), and voice box (larynx).
So, we’ll have to wait and see how this all plays out. I basically stopped drinking alcohol a few years ago and would advise others to do the same.
